Introductory Concept
Manicures and
pedicures often fall into the category of ‘pampering.’ Although it’s often very
enjoyable to have your nails done there are some good reasons why this should
be more than just the occasional luxury experience. There are actually a number
of benefits to regularly investing in manicures and pedicures and they go much
further than just aesthetics.

4 Important Benefits of Manicure and Pedicure
1. ONGOING NAIL HEALTH
A manicure or pedicure provides a
deep clean for your nails, as well as ensuring that they look great. This is an
important part of positive nail health, as both our hands and feet go through a
lot on a daily basis. Regular manicures and pedicures ensure the removal of
dead skill cells, which is an essential part of encouraging new skin cell
growth. New skin cells are key for nails that are strong and healthy. Regular
manicures and pedicures also help to make sure that your nails don’t get into a
poor condition, for example being plagued by fungal infections. If you’re keen
to protect your nail health on an ongoing basis, manicures and pedicures have
an important role to play.
2. A CIRCULATION BOOST
The process of having a manicure
or pedicure usually involves a massage, either to the hands or feet (or both).
Massage is a fast and effective way to boost circulation, which can be
especially slow and sluggish during the winter months. Poor circulation can
result in cold or numbness in hands or feet, as well as swelling or joint pain.
The effect of the massage is to increase blood flow around the body to improve
joint mobility and help to reduce swelling and pain.
3. ENSURING GOOD CONDITION
Our hands and feet can be exposed
to some fairly harsh environments and experiences. Whether it’s walking long
distances in uncomfortable shoes or withstanding extreme weather conditions,
such as snow and ice, it’s easy to forget that these parts of our bodies need
some care and attention too. Regularly scheduling manicures and pedicures will
ensure that nails are in good condition and the skin on hands and feet is well
cared for and soft. This can help to avoid a number of issues, from cracked
hands through to painful calluses on feet.
4. THE DE-STRESS ELEMENT
Manicures and pedicures are
incredibly relaxing. Aside from the blissful effects of the massage, this is
also a great way to set aside time that is just for you. Whether you need time
to think, want to read or just sit with a coffee while your nails are done, the
experience provides plenty of opportunity to take a few minutes out from a busy
life, sit back and relax. Plus, the impact of taking care of your nails, both
in terms of aesthetics and contentment, can make you feel good long after you
finish the appointment.
These are just some of the
benefits of having regular manicures and pedicures – there is a lot more to the
experience than just a great finish.

Manicure table Setup

p
· Towel
must be laid at the center of the table
· Lamp
must be on the right side of the table.
· Manicure
tools must be placed at the right side of the table according to use.
· Manicure
cosmetic supplies must be placed at the left side of the table
· A
plastic container must be taped at the right side of the table near the nail
technician.
This is where you put the used cotton.
A.
Manicuring
1. Remove old
nail polish. In removing old nail polish, moisten small piece of cotton with
nail polish remover and press over old polish on each nail. Then moisten
another cotton with nail polish remover to remove the small piece of cotton on
the nails.
2. File
nails. Discuss with patron the nail shape best suited for her. File the nails
from the little finger towards the thumb, in the following manner:
a. Hold the patron’s finger between the thumb
and first two fingers of your left hand.
b. Hold the file in the right hand and tilt it
slightly so that filing is confined mainly to the underside of the free edge
c. Shape nails into graceful oval tips, never
extreme points. Use the coarse side of file or emery board to shape the nail.
File each nail from corner to center going from right to left and then from
left to right. On each side of the nails use two short quick strokes and one
long sweeping stroke.
Safety
Precautions
1. Filing nail in one direction helps prevent
nail splitting and weakening of nail walls.
2. Filing deep into corner may hurt the skin
and cause ingrown nail growth.
3. If skin is injured, immediately apply an
antiseptic or alum solution.
4. Soften cuticle. After completing the left
hand, file the nails of the right hand. Then immerse left hand into finger
bowl. (soap bath) to permit softening of the cuticle. Finish filing nails of
right hand then remove left hand from finger bowl.
5. Dry
fingertip by holding a towel with both hands. Carefully dry the left hand
including the area between the fingers. Gently loosen and push back the cuticle
adhering the skin on each nail of both hands. Also rub off any dirt deposit
present on the nail.
6. Loosen the cuticle gently using the spoon
end of the cuticle pusher. Keep cuticle moist while working. Hold the cuticle
pusher in a flat position to remove dead cuticle adhering to the nail without
scratching the nail plate. Push cuticle back with towel over index finger.
7. Clean under free edge. Use cotton tipped
orangewood stick dip in soapy water and clean under free edge from the center
toward each side with gentle pressure
8. Trim the
cuticle hang nails or uneven cuticle carefully and push again if necessary
9. Repeat
steps 2-9 for the right hand.
10. Apply
hand lotion or cream around the sides and base of the nail and massage the
hand.
Pedicure
Pedicure
tools and Equipment Needed: The same with tools and equipment needed for
manicure but we will need foot towels instead of the hand towel and we are
going to need toenails separator.
Follow the
procedure in manicuring.
1. File or
shape the toenails straight across (never rounded to conform to the shape of
the toes)
2. Cut the
cuticle only a little. Do not remove the cuticle entirely.
LET US
REMEMBER
· Before carrying out a
plain manicure or a pedicure service, it is necessary to assess the condition
of the client’s skin, nails and cuticles.
·
It is important to select and prepare the appropriate implements, supplies,
cosmetics and equipment to be used.
· When using the cuticle
pusher, avoid too much pressure so that the live tissue at the root of the nail
will not be injured. In case of accidental cut, apply antiseptic immediately.
· The simple manicure and
pedicure service would be carried out easily if the procedure is followed
carefully.
Nail Cleaning Procedure (Summary)
1. Sanitize the client’s hands using
rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle.
2. Soak the client hand in a warm water in
the finger bowl (not more than 3 minutes)
3. Cut the nails on the other hand
according to the client requested nail shape.
Use a small nail clipper. Start cutting
from the pinky. (pinky, ring, middle, index, thumb)
4. File the free edge- Use one direction
only. (Start from the pinky)
5. Buff nail and free edge- This will help
polish and shine the nails.
6. Apply cuticle remover using a small
dropper. Push the cuticle to expose more nail. ( Use one direction only from
the tip down to the cuticle)
7. Nip the excess cuticle- Start from the
left going to the center, then from the right going to the
center.
8. Retouch. Check the nails for sticking
out cuticle or uneven free edge.
